Peles Palace

In 1866 the prince Carol of the Hohenzollern – Sigmaringen arrives to Romania to claim the throne. He choses Sinaia to build the royal residence. Today the summer residence of the royal family, Peles Castle is considered to be the most beautiful from Europe. It was the first castle with elevator and own heating and warm water system from the north-eastern Europe. Having 65 rooms with different renascentist styles (swiss, german, english, spanish, italian and austrian), in Peles Castle you can see famous paintings and sculptures. The stained glass, chandeliers, china, furniture, mirrors, sculptures, carpets all together make of Peles Castle something unique and impressive. The construction of the castle started in 1873-1875 by the austrian architect Wilhelm Doderer, but finished by an czech architect Karel Liman (also the builder of Pelisor Castle) in 1914. You will encounter here different architectural styles which will captivate you.

Snagov Monastery

Snagov Monastery is an old greek – orthodox church, that was built on an old dacic settlement, in the middle of Snagov Lake. With a magnificen view, the monastery is surrounded in mistery. They say here was buried the lord of the Romanian Land (Vallachia) Vlad Tepes, also known as Dracula. It’s a fact that here was the place of silence for the lord and his family. In a letter sent in 1458 to the austro-hungarian emperor Matei Corvin, Vlad Tepes wrote: “Dear friend, if you want to see me, know that i am at this church, Snagov, placed not far from Bucharest.”It was for the first time that Bucharest city was officialy mentioned on a written document. The monastery seems to date from the time of Mircea cel Batran ruler (1408), the grandfather of Vlad Tepes, or even earlyer, from thesnagov-monastery-romanian-monasteries-churches-bucharest-island-snagov-romanians-romanian-people-religion-landscapes-romania-landscape-beautiful-european-scenery time of Vladislav I (1364). Between 1517-1521, the ruler Neagoe Basarab built the actual church with bricks, in byzantine style. The legend says that Vlad Tepes was buried beneath this monastery in big secret, so that the turks won’t find it.
